Burton J. Tabaac, MD, FAHA is an Associate Professor of Neurology at The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, dedicated to the cutting-edge treatment and prevention of neurological diseases. He serves as the Section Chief of Neurology and Medical Director of Stroke affiliated with Carson Tahoe Health.

Dr. Tabaac is a graduate of the fellowship program in cerebrovascular neurology at The Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, MD (2019). After graduating from AUC School of Medicine, where he earned his MD (2014), Tabaac completed a neurology residency at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson in New Brunswick, NJ. There, he was humbled to have been selected as a three-time recipient of The Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award (2016, 2017, and 2018). Tabaac has been honored by being inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. In 2021 he was awarded the prestigious accolade of fellowship affiliation with the American Heart Association.

Tabaac’s research interests in the psychedelics space are focused on the potential for healing traumatic brain injury and promoting rehabilitation in stroke patients. He is the host of The Zero Hour Podcast, featuring discussions with industry experts in psychedelic research. Notable guests include Paul Stamets, Rick Doblin, Robin Carhart-Harris, Matthew Johnson, Gül Dölen, and Bessel van der Kolk. Tabaac served as a TEDx speaker in 2022 at UCLA, presenting a talk entitled, “Mental Health Meets Psychedelics.” As of 2023, Tabaac has been welcomed as a Special Advisor to the Board for The McKenna Academy of Natural Philosophy. In 2024 he was appointed as a Member of the Psychedelic Medicines Working Group for Nevada State to provide expertise and testimony relating to the therapeutic use of entheogens, with presentations to the 83rd Session of the Nevada Legislature.

As of 2025 he is working as a research clinician on the PHATHOM (Psychedelic Healing: Adjunct Therapy Harnessing Opened Malleability) project under the guidance of Dr. Gül Dölen of UC Berkeley, and Dr. Steven Zeiler of Johns Hopkins, pairing psilocybin and enriched environments to promote motor recovery after stroke. Kate has a passion for community-building and education, with nearly two decades of dedicated research in psychedelic medicine. Driven by a deep commitment to mental health, personal transformation, and social justice, she advocates for the therapeutic potential of psychedelics in addressing conditions such as PTSD, addiction, depression, and anxiety—as well as their role in catalyzing profound personal and collective growth.

Kate believes that revising psychedelic drug policy is both a public health imperative and a critical issue of criminal justice reform. She currently serves as executive director of Nevada Coalition for Psychedelic Medicines, a 501(c)(4) advocacy organization, and Sierra Psychedelic Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on education, community building, and risk management around psychedelic medicines. In 2024, she served on the Nevada Psychedelic Medicines Working Group, and is working with legislators in Nevada to advance legislation around psychedelics.

Kate’s dedication to psychedelic therapy is complemented by her studies in depth psychology, Jungian theory, neuroscience, and mindfulness practices. As a retired professional musician and life-long artist, she brings a creative lens to all her work. Kate is a certified yoga instructor, a trained flow state coach, and holds degrees in Religion and French. In addition to completing a 20-hour course in the neuroscience of psychedelics, Kate graduated from Psychedelics Today’s 12-month Vital Psychedelic Training Program in Psychedelic Therapies and Integration, equipping her with a robust foundation for advancing psychedelic education and responsible use.
