Art Lives On

The Old Oak

A beautiful handmade oak tree originally designed for a stage at the priceless music festival on the feather river, has made its way to Reno and grown it's roots at the base of our barn. It is made out of recycled materials by a handful of talented artists.

If alone in the wood, one can hear the gentle metallic whisperings of the many secrets that are contained within the old growth trees tree riding on the wind.

Old Growth - Artist Statement
Trees are beings that operate on a different time scale from us. Some of these living beings have existed in the same location, not far from where we stand, for thousands of years. At least one has been alive for over 5,000 years - longer than recorded human history.

Old growth forests purify water, stabilize weather, control flooding, offer unique ecological niches, and cycle nutrients - including more efficiently sequestering carbon than their newly planted kin.

The full cycle of life, death, and nutrient reuse is visible in such places, with standing dead trees, a range of fallen debris structures, and a dramatic range of tree sizes, ages, and species.

Old Growth seeks to honor the beauty of old growth forests and call attention to their continued destruction due to twisted resource extraction and agricultural incentives, with an interplay of light, scrap fabric, aluminum cans, and recovered wood.

This creation is dedicated to my wonderful, beautiful, master of fun, depth-seeking, always-knolling, and passionate fiance, Stephanie Geerlings.

This piece was created by Joe Rollin, Chris Maloney, and Liz Joyce, with support by Stephanie Geerlings, Emily Wasserman, Ladan Almouzegar, Abe Finkelstein, and many volunteers. Thanks for everyone’s contributions!
